@Geocodio

Mathias Hansen is a Danish-American developer with 25 years of experience across full-stack development, DevOps, and systems administration.

In 2014, he and his wife Michele bootstrapped Geocodio as a side project. Today, it processes more than 2 billion geocoding lookups each month, while still being run by a team small enough to fit around a kitchen table.

Mathias has spoken at php[world] and Laracon US, serves on the board of Laravel Denmark, and co-organises Laravel Live Denmark.

He lives in rural Denmark, building software for the US market from a shed in his backyard, where business hours have always been a flexible concept.

Talk Category: Architecture

Your App Is Fine.
It's Everything Else

Many teams either postpone scaling conversations until something breaks or overcomplicate them long before they're necessary. In reality, Laravel applications often scale far further than people expect.

Drawing on more than a decade of operating Geocodio in production and handling billions of lookups each month, this talk explores where scaling challenges actually emerge - and why your application is rarely the first problem.
Learn how Laravel's built-in capabilities support large-scale systems when combined with thoughtful architectural decisions and operational discipline.

Topics include horizontal scaling, self-healing infrastructure, zero-downtime deployments, geo-distribution, latency management, and database bottlenecks. The talk focuses on practical lessons learned from running a high-volume production platform rather than theoretical scaling strategies.
You'll leave with a clearer understanding of the difference between scalability and availability problems, and how each requires a different set of solutions.

More importantly, you'll learn how to identify genuine bottlenecks, set realistic reliability targets, and make informed infrastructure decisions without introducing unnecessary complexity.
Ideal for Laravel developers who want to think more critically about scale, reliability, and infrastructure, regardless of their level of DevOps experience.
